Today we’re going to talk about the
energy efficiency of windows and doors. Inefficient windows waste energy in
three main ways. The first, infiltration, conduction and then, radiant energy. Now, we’re going to talk about radiant
energy. This is the energy we get from the sun. And we’re going to focus in two
areas here. First, infrared, which is the warming rays of the sun. If you’ve ever
seen a pet or your children playing in a sun spot on the floor and they’re warm
that’s infrared. If you’ve ever experienced ultraviolet, that’s where you
may see some fading of your floors, your drapes, or even paintings. Both of those
problems cause your home to be less efficient. Now the way that we work to
correct this issue in new windows is through something called Low-E. Now this
is a silver coating that is applied to the glass at the molecular level and is
nearly invisible. And the way it works is as the sun comes through the glass, the
visible light rays are allowed to penetrate while we return as much as
possible of the ultraviolet and the infrared rays back to their source.
Simply put, this makes your home more efficient, and it makes you more
comfortable in your home.
